My Fight Against Burnout

I’m a parent and former teacher turned burnout and resilience coach. With over 30 years of experience in both roles, I bring a wealth of knowledge, first hand experience, and deep understanding of the demands parents and educators face in today’s world.

A love of learning and teaching is in my DNA, thanks to my mum—a dedicated teacher who spoke passionately about the beauty of the profession. She was also a lifelong learner, and she instilled that same love of growth in my siblings and me by providing us with incredible and diverse learning opportunities. I believe teaching and coaching are among the most rewarding professions in the world, but in 2014, I started to feel a shift in my teaching career.

The endless paperwork, extended hours, and mounting external pressures left me overwhelmed. The demands on the education system—and on teachers—were enormous, and I found myself caught in the middle.

What I didn’t realise at the time was that burnout was creeping in. Chronic tiredness, despite getting at least seven hours of sleep, frequent migraines, self-doubt, and mental exhaustion were just some of the warning signs I ignored. Then, in May 2014, I was invited to participate in a personal growth program. I said yes—and it turned out to be the smartest decision I made that year. Through the program, I regained my sense of power and self-worth, reclaimed my health and happiness, and experienced first-hand the power of personal resilience. Most importantly, I learned that taking care of myself first didn’t just benefit me—it allowed me to show up as the best version of myself for others. Now, I help parents, teachers, and professionals do the same. Because when you prioritise your well-being, you don’t just survive—you thrive.

To Look After Your Health:

  • Be aware of your stress levels: Plan times to check in with yourself. Find strategies that work for your to lower stress and anxiety.

  • Remember you are only human: Create a strong work-life balance and be strict with yourself. Give yourself a break.

I am a teacher and have been in the profession for over 25 years. I have held various rolesover this time, including several in middle management.
