Want to know what shaped the work I do today?

Hi, I’m Jackie Black, Emotional Resilience Coach, author and speaker. My own experience with burnout led me on a journey that changed how I understand stress, resilience and our capacity under pressure.

I wish I’d understood this when I was burning out

I spent more than 30 years in education, in a profession I genuinely loved. Teaching and learning have always been part of who I am.

A lot of that comes from my mum. She was a dedicated teacher and lifelong learner who spoke passionately about the beauty of the profession. She gave my siblings and me incredible opportunities to learn, explore and grow, and that love of learning has stayed with me throughout my life.

But by 2014, something had changed.

The paperwork, long hours and mounting external pressures were taking their toll. I was constantly tired despite sleeping, experiencing frequent migraines, questioning myself and becoming mentally exhausted.

I didn’t recognise it as burnout at the time.

That same year, I said yes to a personal development program that became an important turning point. It helped me shift my mindset, rebuild my confidence and see myself and my circumstances differently. The change was noticeable enough that colleagues began commenting on how differently I was handling things.

What I didn’t understand then was what chronic stress had been doing to my physiology, or how much it had reduced my mental and emotional capacity. I didn’t understand why it had become harder to think clearly, stay aligned with my values and show up as the person I wanted to be.

I would come to understand all of that much later.

Building Your Capacity for Stress

Small things that can make a difference:

  • Notice your early signals: Pay attention to what changes when pressure is building. Your body, thoughts, emotions and behaviour can tell you a lot before you reach breaking point.

  • Check what’s draining you: Stress isn't only about the big things. Notice the everyday demands, interactions and thought patterns that continually draw on your reserves.

  • Make room for what renews you: Look for small opportunities to restore energy throughout your day. Renewal doesn't have to mean finding an hour you don't have.

  • Pause before automatically saying yes: Before taking on something new, consider what it will ask of you and whether you genuinely have the capacity for it.

  • Get support before you’re running on empty: You don't have to wait until things become unmanageable. The earlier you recognise what's happening, the more choice you have about what comes next.

From Experience to Understanding

Where Is Jackie Now?

In 2015, I made the difficult decision to leave teaching. I loved being in the classroom and working with students, but I could see the toll the profession was taking on me. Walking away was hard, but it was the right decision.

My interest in personal development had actually begun decades earlier, when I discovered Dr Wayne Dyer’s Your Erroneous Zones on a hostel coffee table during a summer holiday in the early 1980s. That chance discovery sparked a fascination with personal growth that has stayed with me ever since.

In 2021, that lifelong love of learning, teaching and personal development led me into transformational coaching and mentoring. It was also when I discovered heart coherence and began to understand something I wish I’d known years earlier: what prolonged stress can do to our physiology and our capacity to think, feel and respond.

Suddenly, so much of my own experience made sense.

Today, I bring those worlds together — decades as an educator, years of personal development, my own experience of burnout, and the techniques and understanding I’ve gained since.

I now work with parents, educators and professionals to help them build their capacity, work with stress in real time and have greater access to the way they want to think, feel and respond — especially under pressure.

From Experience to Understanding

Where Is Jackie Now?

In 2015, I made the difficult decision to leave the teaching profession. While I absolutely loved being in the classroom and working with students, I could see the direction education was heading, and I wasn’t willing to sacrifice my well-being for it. Walking away was hard, but it was the right decision for me.

My passion for personal development had been growing for decades. It all started in the early 1980s when I stumbled upon Dr. Wayne Dyer’s book, Your Erroneous Zones, on the coffee table of a hostel during a summer holiday. That book opened my eyes, and ever since, I’ve been fascinated by the power of personal growth.

In 2021, I stepped into the world of transformational coaching and mentoring after someone pointed out how naturally my love for teaching, personal development, and helping others fit together. That realisation changed everything. Now, I get to do work that lights me up—helping not just educators, but also families and professionals, build resilience, manage stress, and thrive.

Hear From People I’ve Worked With

I am a teacher and have been in the profession for over 25 years. I have held various rolesover this time, including several in middle management. Since coming out of the pandemic in 2021, I had been feeling very negative and unmotivated about my work and myself. This ledto frequent moments of anxiety and some bouts of depression.

I had trouble focusing and sleeping. I was often irritable, would find myself procrastinating and had trouble tacklingtasks with my usual efficacy. I suspected that I was suffering from burnout and could not muster the resilience to move beyond this dark period.

After having come to this realisation, I decided to seek support. I found working on myself with Jackie to be profoundly rewarding. Thanks to Jackie’s coaching style and targeted methods of support, I have begun to regain my confidence and re-develop my self-respect. I have learn a lot about myself and, most significantly,

I rediscovered my core values and unequivocally rely on them to guide my everyday actions and decisions.

I continue to use the tools and strategies that I have learn from Jackie and I am well on the way to

re-establishing my former self-worth.

- Monique R,

High School Teacher

I have seen a huge improvement with myself and the girls. I think the biggest light bulb moment I've had is it’s actually me creating the stress for myself and the girls. I've noticed I've been a lot more patient and I'm now resolving not reacting - something so simple but it's such a game changer.

Feeling like I'm back to my normal, happy patient mummy, My daughter absolutely loves doing this with me and we are now sitting down to do this together daily. It works wonders on us both. I have had such an incredible shift and not just with her but in all areas of life of feeling myself again and stress free and when

I do feel like I'm starting to get a little bit worked up, I've been going back to the technique.

I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks to Jackie for sharing the benefits of heart coherence during the recent

6-week online course. It was truly an enlightening experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have met so many incredible individuals with inspiring stories and valuable insights.

The techniques and practices we learned have had a profound impact on both my health and my relationships. Her guidance and support throughout the course were instrumental in helping me understand and apply these principles effectively.

I strongly encourage anyone who is looking for more out of life to reach out to Jackie and join her for one of her courses. It will be one of the best decisions you can make. Thank you once again Jackie for your dedication and for making such a positive difference in my life.

- Jacqui G,

Mother

I want to express my gratitude for extending your hand with your gesture and intention to take my spent soul and lead me to the heart congruent pathway to turn my health around. I was in a stuck place and was lacking energy, extremely tired, low in confidence, morbidly obese and in a generally unhealthy state. This has happened over a period of a few years, maybe 5 to 7 years. I am grateful you took me by the hand as I had certainly all but given up hope of ever regaining my health and vitality.

While I could barely muster the energy to focus,in a surprisingly good few sessions I was able to focus long enough to have a real impact on other aspects of my life too.

I have jumped on board with a lifestyle program that is making a difference. Your sessions have given me tools that I now utilise to increase my brain capacity, clarity of mind and have contributed to the turn a round of my health and vitality.  I'm not 'there' yet but I'm well on my way.

- Joan M.

Property Manager

Working with Jackie opened my awareness to an entirely new dimension of intelligence—the intelligence of the heart. I learned how to tap into my heart’s wisdom to handle reactive situations with greater space, empathy, and connection. By consciously ‘switching on’ my heart, I’ve been able to shift my perspective, improve my relationships, and take greater ownership of my inner strength. One of the most valuable practices I’ve implemented is checking in with my emotional state each morning.

This simple habit has helped me approach each day with curiosity and intention, often starting with heart-focused breathing before even getting out of bed. While I’m still working on applying these techniques in challenging family interactions, I now recognise the obstacles and am actively observing them—something

I never did before. Another key take away from my sessions was the power of language. I’ve gained a deeper understanding of how heart-based communication allows me to express myself in a way that aligns with my values, even in difficult moments. This work has been truly transformative, and I’m grateful for the tools and awareness it has given me.
